Kevan Herold, M.D.

Research Summary
Dr. Kevan Herold is an Endocrinologist with a special interest in autoimmune diseases and diabetes. He sees adolescent and adult patients with all forms of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Dr. Herold is conducting research on immunotherapy for treatment of Type 1 diabetes and is the Medical Director of the Islet Transplantation program at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Herold’s laboratory work involves studies of induction of immunologic tolerance to autoimmunity. His current clinical trials are listed below.

1. Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet: Clin Ctr at Columbia University
This application is to establish a Clinical Center of TrialNet at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University. At this Center, trial for prevention and treatment of Type 1 diabetes are conducted.

2. Phase I/II Trial and Phase II trial of HOKT3(1(ALA-ALA)) in Type 1 Diabetes
This application is for trials of anti-CD3 mAb, hOKT3gamma1 (Ala-Ala) for treatment of new onset (T1DM). The support for these studies is from the Immune Tolerance Network and NIDDK.

3. Islet cell resource Center at Columbia University:
Dr. Herold is the Co-principal investigator for an Islet Cell Resource laboratory at Columbia University. This Center sponsors trials involving islet cell transplant. Currently a trial of islet transplantation in patients with Type 1 diabetes with a stable kidney transplant is ongoing.
